Why these ingredients work

  • Spinach provides folate, magnesium and iron.
  • Cucumber contributes hydration and vitamin K.
  • Avocado supplies heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.
  • Lemon adds vitamin C and enhances flavour.
  • Protein powder helps support satiety and muscle repair.

Therapeutic notes

This smoothie combines leafy greens, quality protein and healthy fats to support sustained energy, digestive health and healthy blood sugar balance. The fibre nourishes the gut microbiome while antioxidant-rich vegetables help protect cells from oxidative stress.

A green smoothie is a meal in itself and can be as nourishing as you like. Raw kale can be very abrasive on the digestive tract, causing bloating and discomfort. It’s best to steam or blanch kale leaves for a smoothie. Refresh with cool water and pure with ice. For sensitive tummies, use lettuce or parsley instead of kale.

FAQs

Can I make this smoothie ahead of time?

Yes. For the best flavour and nutrient retention, prepare the smoothie up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate it in an airtight glass jar or bottle. Give it a good shake before serving, as some natural separation may occur.

Can I freeze this smoothie?

Absolutely. Pour the smoothie into freezer-safe containers or silicone moulds and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or blend briefly after partially thawing to restore its creamy texture.

Can I replace the protein powder?

Yes. I recommend using your preferred protein powder. You can also omit the protein powder if you prefer, though the smoothie will contain less protein and may not be as satisfying.

Can children drink this smoothie?

Yes, although younger children may find kale’s flavour a little strong. For a more child-friendly version, reduce the amount of kale, use baby spinach instead, and add a little extra banana or blueberries for natural sweetness. If adding protein powder for children, choose one that is suitable for their age and dietary needs.

Can I substitute the kale?

Certainly, baby spinach is an excellent alternative and has a milder flavour, while still providing valuable vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. You could also use a combination of spinach and kale to gradually introduce the flavour if you’re new to green smoothies.
