FAQs

Can I make these tartlets ahead of time?

Yes. They can be prepared up to two days in advance and stored in the refrigerator, or frozen for up to one month.

Are these tartlets gluten-free?

Yes. They’re naturally gluten-free as they’re made with almonds, macadamias and dates instead of wheat flour.

Can I use fresh berries instead of frozen?

Yes. Fresh berries can be used, although frozen berries help create a firmer filling as the coconut oil sets.

Are these suitable for a Paleo diet?

Yes. The recipe uses whole-food ingredients with no grains, dairy or refined sugar, making it suitable for most Paleo eating patterns.

Can I substitute the nuts?

Yes. Pecans, walnuts or cashews can be used, although almonds and macadamias provide the best texture and flavour.

Therapeutic notes

Berries are among the richest dietary sources of anthocyanins, naturally occurring polyphenols that contribute to their vibrant red, blue and purple colours. Research suggests diets rich in berries may support cardiovascular health, cognitive function and help reduce oxidative stress.

Almonds and macadamias provide heart-healthy unsaturated fats, fibre and vitamin E, while Medjool dates contribute natural sweetness along with potassium and polyphenols. Together, these wholesome ingredients create a nourishing dessert that’s satisfying without relying on refined sugars or highly processed ingredients.

Paleo berry tartlets with fresh mixed berries and a grain-free almond crust

Ingredients

Units Scale
For the base 1 cup almonds 1 cup macadamia nuts 1/2 cup currants 1/2 cup Medjool dates, pitted 2 tablespoons raw cacao 1/2 cup cacao butter, melted 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted 1 teaspoon mesquite powder 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon organic vanilla essence For the filling 2 cups frozen berries 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted 1 teaspoon organic maple syrup 1/2 teaspoon rosewater Berries for garnish Coconut Yoghurt Recipe here

Instructions

To make the base

  1. Place the almonds, macadamias, currants, dates, cacao, melted cacao butter, melted coconut oil, mesquite powder, cinnamon and vanilla into a high-speed food processor. Process until the mixture comes together into a sticky dough.
  2. Lightly grease 8 individual tartlet tins (approximately 8 cm each). Divide the mixture evenly between the tins and press firmly over the base and up the sides to form the tart shells.
  3. Freeze for at least 2 hours, or until completely firm.

To make the filling

  1. Place the frozen berries, melted coconut oil, maple syrup and rosewater into a high-speed blender.
  2. Blend until smooth and creamy. The coconut oil may begin to set as it comes into contact with the frozen berries—this is completely normal and helps create a luscious, mousse-like filling.

To assemble

  1. Carefully remove the frozen tart shells from their tins.
  2. Spoon or pipe the berry filling evenly into each tartlet.
  3. Garnish with fresh or frozen berries and a few toasted coconut flakes or coconut shards.
  4. Serve immediately, or refrigerate until ready to serve. Accompany with a dollop of coconut yoghurt.

Notes

  • Allow the tartlets to stand for 10–15 minutes before serving for the creamiest texture.
  • Fresh raspberries, blueberries or strawberries all work beautifully as a garnish.
  • Store refrigerated for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
