Bowl of activated Paleo rawnola with almonds, buckwheat, pepitas, sunflower seeds, coconut and dried cranberries.

Packed with activated nuts and seeds, coconut and naturally sweet cranberries, this rawnola (raw granola) is a wholesome grain-free alternative to traditional granola. Better still, there’s no baking required—simply combine the ingredients, store in the refrigerator and enjoy whenever you need a satisfying breakfast or snack.

I love making a batch over the weekend so it’s ready for busy mornings or relaxed holiday breakfasts. It’s equally delicious sprinkled over coconut yoghurt, served with almond milk, or enjoyed straight from the jar when you need an energy boost after a surf, yoga session or walk.

For an extra treat, blend a handful with a few soft Medjool dates and roll into bite-sized energy balls—perfect for lunchboxes, picnics or healthy snacking.

Why activate nuts and seeds?

Soaking nuts and seeds before drying is a traditional preparation method that softens their texture and removes surface residues. Many people enjoy activated nuts for their crisp texture and improved flavour after dehydration.

To activate nuts and seeds:

  1. Soak in filtered water for 4–8 hours, depending on the variety.
  2. Drain and rinse thoroughly.
  3. Pat dry.
  4. Dehydrate until completely crisp. Seeds generally take 8–12 hours, while larger nuts such as almonds may require up to 24–48 hours, depending on your dehydrator and humidity.

Chef’s notes:

Buckwheat is technically a seed rather than a cereal grain. While some Paleo followers include it because it is naturally gluten-free and minimally processed, others choose to omit it. If preferred, replace it with extra activated almonds, pepitas or sunflower seeds.

If activating your own nuts and seeds for the recipe below, allow 4–8 hours for soaking and 8–48 hours for dehydrating, depending on the ingredient.
